HOW TO UPGRADE A MAC MINI TO SSD
When I originally purchase the Late 2014 Early 2015 Mac Mini, I knew I was going to have to upgrade the 5400 rpm spinning hard drive to an SSD. When I got the Mac Mini, I realized very quickly that not having SSD was a no go for me! I have been using SSD‘s for a few years now and you just can’t go back once you are used to the speed. It took me a while but I finally got off my lazy butt and swapped out the 1TB spinning drive for a 480GB solid state drive (SSD).
In order to upgrade the drive in my Mac Mini I needed to buy a couple special tools, so instead of buying one off tools I decided to get the iFixIt tool kit. I figured I have been watching their tear downs for years so I might as well give back.
You have to be very careful when taking apart the Mac Mini! Everything is so tiny and easy to lose, or forget where to put things back. I followed a video on YouTube and made sure to put the screws and parts in some sort of order.
I picked up an SSD at a local electronics shop and went with a PNY. My logic was that even if I didn’t know the brand name very well….I was sure that most of these SSD‘s were made in the same few factories anyways. Plus I didn’t want to wait for Amazon to delivery, I was “ready”.
The boot up times are amazing (as i knew they would be)!! I went from about 55 seconds with the old drive to 16.12 seconds with the freshly installed SSD drive. Besides the boot times the speed of the drive has given my Mac Mini a new life! I am not even joking when I say it’s a totally new computer. I do a lot of iMovie and Final Cut Pro X video editing and with large HD and 4K video files, it would take forever for the video to load. Now, The video thumbnails and the speed at which I can “really” start editing is super fast.
If I could go back in time I probably would have just bought the Mac Mini with SSD or at least a Fusion drive, but I needed a Mac and quick so I went this route. I am happy with the current system, so I will keep it. I do wish that Apple would offer a Mac Mini Pro with a quad core CPU and some better graphics, but we all know that’s not going to happen. I guess I will just have to keep this one and start saving my money for another 15″ MacBook Pro to get the extra cores and GPU power…
